What do “cohort” and “evergreen mean?
Cohorts are groups of students completing a course experience together. Cohorts have start and end dates, and typically have from 10-100 students.
In Wobo, cohorts called “student groups” are a collection of students with access to one specific workbook. The start and end dates of the student group help automate some admin work - read more on that below.
An Evergreen course is one that does not have start or end dates; students can enrol and finish the course at any time.
In Wobo, you can create an evergreen workbook by ignoring workbook start and end dates.
Did you know? Research from prominent leaders in the EdTech industry report that cohort-based learning leads to much higher engagement and completion rates, among other benefits (like higher profits for creators!)
Choosing Workbook Dates
- First create a workbook.
- When you’re ready to share your workbook, click “Share” at the top of the workbook editor screen. A pop-up will open asking if you’d like to name the student group (cohort) and assign dates. By default, the option to ignore dates is enabled, and the student group inherits the workbook name. To create an evergreen workbook, continue to the next step. To create a cohort-based workbook, you can rename the student group to reflect the time frame (eg. Spring 2022), and switch the toggle to the off position. Two calendars will appear that will allow you to set a start and end date for the workbook.
Tip: Choose a Start Date based on the earliest date you want your students to access the workbook content.
Start and End Dates
- Before the cohort start date, the workbook is upcoming and can't be accessed by students.
- On the cohort start date, the workbook is active, and can be viewed and edited.
- On the cohort end date, the workbook can still be edited by the student, but it's no longer showing on your dashboard by default, and you can no longer edit the student list since the course is now complete.
Statuses
Once a workbook is created, it will be in 1 of 4 statuses:
- Draft: The workbook has been created, but has not been shared with students yet.
- Upcoming: The start date of the cohort is scheduled in the future. Students can't access upcoming workbooks.
- Active: Cohorts are active when the date is between the cohort's start and end date OR if the workbook has been shared with students with dates ignored. Students can view and complete workbook exercises, and instructors can edit the cohort details like name and cohort end date.
- Completed: Cohorts are completed when the cohort end date has been reached or if they’ve been manually marked as completed from the dashboard. They can no longer be edited by instructors, but students can continue to access and edit their work.
